Internal Document — Version 1.0
The UrbanLoved
Product Standard
This document does not describe what we sell. It describes what we refuse to sell, and why. Every product that carries the UrbanLoved name must pass every principle written here. There are no exceptions.
01
Materials
Every material that enters an UrbanLoved product must have an honest origin, a legible texture, and an honest end. If you cannot describe what it is made from in one word, it does not belong here.

Never Used
02
Colour Palette
The UrbanLoved colour world is warm, quiet, and anchored in the natural world. Our palette does not follow trends. It is fixed. A new product that requires a colour outside this system does not belong in this collection.
The default. Every product begins here unless there is a specific reason not to.
For woven goods. Unbleached, never optical white.
Accent surfaces, hardware, secondary colourways.
Typography, ink, trim detail. Not black.
Seasonal accent only. One product per collection maximum.
Colours That Do Not Exist in Our World
03
Form Language
There is a recognisable geometry to UrbanLoved objects. It cannot be reduced to a single adjective. It is the result of six principles applied consistently across every product category.
Soft geometry, not hard corners
Edges are broken or slightly radiused. A perfectly sharp 90° corner on a product meant for a living space reads as institutional. Edges should feel considered.
No visible hardware
Screws, bolts, rivets, and fastenings should be hidden or flush. If a fastening must be visible, it is a feature — not a compromise. Exposed phillips-head screws are never acceptable.
Visible construction when it is honest
Saddle stitching on leather, linen seams on upholstery, dovetail joints on wood — these are permitted and celebrated when they are real. Decorative fake stitching or faux joinery is never allowed.
One dominant material per product
An UrbanLoved product is made of one thing. A ceramic bowl does not need a cork base unless the cork serves a clear function. Material combinations are permitted when each earns its place.
Organic shape language over machined precision
Where human hands were involved, it should be legible. A slight asymmetry in a hand-thrown bowl is a feature. Uniform machine perfection on a product that should feel handmade is dishonest.
No logos embossed, printed, or stamped on product surfaces
The wordmark lives on the tag, the packaging, and the insole — never on the face of the product. The product should be beautiful without knowing who made it.
04
Quality Standard
Quality is not a price point. It is a set of tests. Every product we consider is passed through six specific assessments before a buying decision is made.
“We would rather sell nothing than sell something that embarrasses a customer’s home.”
The ten-year question
Would this product be in better or worse condition after ten years of daily use by a family with a dog? Materials that degrade gracefully pass. Materials that look cheap after six months fail.
The silence test
Every moving part — collar buckle, bowl feet, crate latch, toy squeaker — must operate silently or near-silently. A product that rattles, creaks, or squeaks in daily use will not be sold.
The wash test
All textile products must survive 40 washes at 40°C without pilling, shrinkage beyond 3%, or colour shift. We test this before commitment.
The weight test
An UrbanLoved product should feel more substantial than you expect it to be. Under-weight products feel cheap regardless of their finish. We weigh comparable products in the category and set a floor.
The edge test
Every edge, seam, and join is inspected by hand. No raw edges on fabric. No flash on moulded parts. No visible adhesive. No burrs on metalwork.
The drop test
Ceramic and stoneware items are dropped from 80cm onto hardwood. We accept a breakage rate of under 5% across a batch. A ceramic product that shatters on a normal fall will not be sold.
Automatic Rejection Criteria
05
Photography Standard
Our photography is not product photography. It is interior documentary photography in which a product happens to appear. The distinction is everything.
No studio white seamless
Every product is photographed in a real interior — a home, not a set. The floor, the light, the shadows are always real.
Natural light only
No flash. No softboxes. Morning or late-afternoon window light. Overcast days are preferable to harsh direct sun. The light must have a direction.
The product is never the only subject
Context earns meaning. A bowl photographed with the floor it will sit on, the wall it will sit against, and the space between them tells more truth than a product on white.
Pets are optional, not required
A dog in a photograph is not a pet product advertisement. It is a home document. Pets appear when their presence is natural — never posed, never looking at camera.
No props purchased for the shoot
Every element in a photograph must belong to a real home. A dry branch in a vase, a book left open, a folded cloth — these are found, not staged.
Colour grading is fixed
Warm whites, stone shadows, and ochre-toned midtones. Every image in the UrbanLoved library is processed identically. Variety comes from content, not from grading.
Grain is acceptable
We prefer a slight film grain to clinical digital smoothness. Images that look too clean feel dishonest.
Shot on medium format when possible
Hasselblad, Fujifilm GFX, or Leica S. When this is not available, full-frame mirrorless with primes only. No kit zoom lenses.
Never in a Photograph
06
Packaging Standard
Unboxing is the first physical moment of the relationship. It must feel like receiving something important from someone who cared about the presentation. Five layers. No waste. No surprise.
The outer box
Rigid board, 3mm minimum. Warm ivory / natural kraft exterior, no printing except a single small debossed wordmark on the lid face. No colour banding. No product photography on the outside.
The tissue
Single sheet of warm ivory tissue with a tone-on-tone diamond grid pattern. Folded over the product once. No excessive layering. No crinkled kraft paper fill.
The card insert
One single card, 600gsm cotton rag paper. Front: wordmark and 'For our loved ones.' in small serif italic. Back: care instructions in 7pt mono. No QR codes. No social handles. No discount codes.
The seal
One round wax seal in warm stone colour pressing the tissue closed. No stickers. No tape on the product itself.
The shipping overbox
Plain recycled kraft corrugated. No branded exterior printing. A single sticker label: address only. The unboxing experience begins inside, not at the doorstep.

Copywriting
We write like a design magazine, not a pet shop. Quiet authority. Material honesty. No hype. The writing earns trust by withholding what lesser brands oversell.

Customer Experience
Every interaction after the order is placed is part of the product. The shipping email, the box, the card inside, the reply to a question — these are not operations. They are design decisions.
“The experience of buying something should feel as considered as the object itself.”
Shipping
Standard: 3–5 business days. We do not offer next-day delivery. Speed is not our promise. Arrival in perfect condition is. Every order is packed by hand.
Dispatch email
One sentence. Your order is on its way. No tracking number in the subject line. No marketing content. No social call-to-action. The shipment tracking link is the only link.
Order confirmation
Two sentences maximum. Your order number. A note that we will be in touch when it ships. Nothing else. No review request. No referral code.
Returns
No form. No automated chatbot. Write to care@urbanloved.com. A human responds within 24 hours. We ask one question: what happened? We resolve every case as a conversation.
Customer service voice
First person singular. 'I received your message.' Not 'We have received your enquiry.' Warm without being familiar. Direct without being cold. No scripts. No templated responses.
Post-purchase follow-up
One email, 14 days after delivery. A single question: is everything as expected? No review request. No discount code. A genuine check-in. If the answer is no, it is a service conversation, not a damage-control one.
Packaging insert
One card. Front: a single line of copy chosen from the UrbanLoved voice library. Back: care instructions, written as prose, not a bulleted list. No website URL. No social handles.

Curation Rules
UrbanLoved is not defined by what it sells. It is defined by what it chooses not to sell. The eight refusals below are permanent. They apply to every buying decision, regardless of market pressure, margin, or customer request.
“The most important word in our vocabulary is not the name of any product. It is the word no.”
Novelty and character products
A product shaped like a cartoon character, or decorated with a brand or licensed image, cannot exist in a space that was designed with intention. We do not compete with the toy aisle.
Products that require justification
If someone would need to hide a product when guests arrive, we should not sell it. Everything we carry should be at home in the most considered interior.
Products with claim-heavy copy
If a manufacturer's marketing requires the words 'clinically proven,' 'vet-recommended,' 'scientifically formulated,' or similar authority-borrowing language, we are skeptical of the product itself.
Seasonal or trend products
We do not sell Halloween costumes. We do not sell Christmas products. We do not sell products whose relevance expires with a calendar page. The Rest Collection should be as relevant in 2036 as it is today.
Products that exist only to be photographed
Instagram has produced an entire category of products that look beautiful in a photograph and function poorly in use. If a product is more interesting in a photograph than in a home, we will not carry it.
Products that compromise pet safety for aesthetics
A collar with a hardware detail that digs into a dog's neck. A bowl that tips easily. A bed that retains heat dangerously. Beauty does not override function, ever.
Products with built-in obsolescence
We do not sell a product that is designed to be replaced within a year. Consumables are permitted. Durables must last. If a manufacturer cannot provide a meaningful warranty, the conversation ends.
Products that are cheaper versions of things that already exist
We do not need a fourth linen dog bed at a lower price point. We need the first linen dog bed that is also the last one someone will ever buy.
Ten years from now, people should be able to recognize an UrbanLoved product even if the logo is completely removed.
