UrbanLoved — Internal Foundation Document — 2025

The Soul
of UrbanLoved

This is not a marketing document. It is not a brand guidelines PDF. It is the internal record of what we believe, what we refuse, and how we will build a company worthy of the trust people place in us when they bring a pet into their home. Every person who works here — in any capacity — should understand this document before making a single decision.

01Why We Exist

The problem is not that people cannot find pet products.
The problem is that almost none of them are worth owning.

Walk into any pet store — physical or digital — and you will find thousands of products. Nearly all of them were designed to be noticed on a shelf or in a search result, not to live gracefully inside a home. They are oversized, overbranded, made of materials chosen for cost, and designed as if the owner has no taste and the pet has no dignity.

The people who own pets are the same people who care deeply about the objects in their homes. They read about architecture. They choose furniture slowly and deliberately. They do not own things they cannot look at. And yet when they bring an animal into that home, the products available to them treat both the home and the animal as afterthoughts.

UrbanLoved exists to close that gap. Not with a wider catalog. Not with a louder brand. With fewer, better things — designed to belong in the home, built to last, and made with genuine respect for the animal, the owner, and the space they share.

If UrbanLoved succeeds, the world has fewer pet products and better ones. Homes feel more whole, not more cluttered. Animals live in environments designed with them in mind, not around them. And the people who love their pets are no longer asked to compromise their homes to care for them.

02Our Beliefs

Seventeen things we hold to be true.
None of them are negotiable.

01

An animal is not a hobby.

A pet is a permanent member of the household. Every product we make should reflect that permanence — in its materials, its construction, its presence in the room.

02

The home should not apologize for the animal.

Pet ownership should not require aesthetic compromise. The right product disappears into the home. It belongs. It was designed for exactly this room.

03

Restraint is a form of respect.

We do not add features, colors, or details unless they are necessary. Every element present in an UrbanLoved product was chosen. Nothing arrived by accident or convention.

04

Quality is not a tier. It is a minimum.

We do not offer good, better, and best. There is only the UrbanLoved standard. Everything below it does not exist in our catalog.

05

Materials remember how they were made.

The weight of linen, the grain of oak, the temperature of ceramic — these are not aesthetic choices. They are the tactile memory of the object. A product made of cheap materials cannot feel honest, regardless of its design.

06

Trends are a tax on people who do not trust themselves.

We do not follow seasons. We do not release capsule collections. We make things that are correct, and we make them until something more correct exists.

07

Sustainability is the starting condition, not the selling point.

We do not market our materials as virtuous. We select them because they are the right choice. Durability is inherently sustainable. We do not make products that need to be replaced.

08

The unboxing is part of the product.

How an object arrives is the first physical impression of the brand. If the inside is beautiful and the outside is careless, we have already communicated something we did not intend.

09

Comfort is not softness. It is precision.

We do not equate comfort with excess padding or oversized forms. A product is comfortable when it fits — the animal, the space, the hand that cleans it — exactly as intended.

10

We do not design for photography. We design for life.

A product should look better after two years of use than it did on the day it arrived. Patina is evidence of a life lived well. We design for that outcome, not for the launch image.

11

The animal's experience matters more than the owner's pride.

We design with the animal in mind first. Not the room. Not the photograph. The comfort, safety, and dignity of the animal that will use the product every day.

12

Silence is a design principle.

We do not fill space. We do not compete for attention. The best UrbanLoved product is the one you stop noticing — because it is exactly right.

13

Scale changes nothing.

Whether we are selling to ten customers or ten million, the standard does not change. The product does not change. The care does not change. Growth is never a reason to lower the bar.

14

We are in the business of permanence.

We are not in the business of selling products. We are in the business of making things that last — objects, relationships, trust. Everything we do should be evaluated against that horizon.

15

A smaller catalog is a braver one.

Every product we add is a decision to stand behind it completely. A large catalog is often evidence of uncertainty. Our catalog is a record of conviction.

16

The customer knows more than we think.

We do not simplify, oversell, or explain. We trust that the person reading our copy, opening our packaging, and placing our product in their home is fully capable of appreciating exactness.

17

We earn the name on every product.

The UrbanLoved name is not a mark of origin. It is a promise. Every product that carries it must be worth that promise on the day it ships and every day after.

03What We Refuse

What we will not do is as important
as what we will.

01

We will not make cheap products.

Not a lower-priced line. Not a budget tier. Not a starter range. If a product cannot be made to the UrbanLoved standard at a given price, we do not make it at that price.

02

We will not chase trends.

No seasonal collections. No limited editions driven by the calendar. No products that exist because something is popular right now. Popularity has a short half-life. We are building for a longer horizon.

03

We will not market with urgency.

No countdowns. No 'only 3 left.' No flash sales. No manufactured scarcity. The customer who wants what we make will find it. We do not manufacture pressure to accelerate a decision.

04

We will not design for the algorithm.

We do not make products designed to perform in search results, rank in Amazon categories, or win a thumbnail comparison. We design for the person who lives with the object every day.

05

We will not flood the catalog.

Every product added is a product we must stand behind completely. When in doubt, we subtract. A smaller catalog maintained to a higher standard is always preferable to a larger one maintained unevenly.

06

We will not copy competitors.

We do not look sideways. There is no 'version of what they make, but better.' UrbanLoved products begin with a problem, a material, or an idea — not with a competitor's SKU.

07

We will not use synthetic materials where natural ones exist.

If linen works, we do not use polyester. If oak works, we do not use MDF. If ceramic works, we do not use plastic. The exception is when a natural material is genuinely worse for the animal's safety or the product's function.

08

We will not over-communicate.

No excessive copy. No long explanations defending why a product exists. No email sequences. No retargeting. If a product needs a lengthy explanation, it is not yet the right product.

09

We will not reward speed over judgment.

We will not release a product before it is correct because a launch date exists. Dates move. Standards do not.

10

We will not let the brand become loud.

No large logos. No signature colorways for brand recognition. No loud prints. No products that signal the brand from across the room. An UrbanLoved product should not announce itself. It should simply be.

04Product Standard

These are not guidelines.
They are conditions.

01Materials
  • Natural materials are default. Synthetic materials require justification in writing before production begins.

  • Accepted textiles: linen, cotton canvas, wool, leather from tanneries with full supply chain transparency.

  • Accepted structures: solid oak, ash, walnut, bamboo, ceramic, stoneware, natural rubber.

  • No polyester, no nylon, no PVC, no MDF, no ABS plastic where a natural alternative exists.

  • All dyes must be OEKO-TEX certified at minimum. Water-based finishes preferred.

02Durability
  • Every product is designed to outlast the life it is made for. A dog bed must withstand five years of daily use without structural failure.

  • Seams are tested to four times the stress load of intended use.

  • Hardware — buckles, rings, clips — is rated to 3× the weight of the heaviest applicable animal.

  • We do not use materials that degrade through normal washing, UV exposure, or contact with animal saliva or moisture.

03Sustainability
  • We do not claim sustainability without documentation. Every material claim must be traceable to its source.

  • Packaging is compostable or recyclable. No combination materials that cannot be separated.

  • We do not offer free returns on non-defective items. Reverse logistics has a real environmental cost.

  • Longevity is the primary sustainability argument. We do not need a carbon offset program if we make things that last.

04Comfort
  • Every product that an animal rests in or on is tested for pressure distribution across the relevant weight range.

  • No sharp edges, protruding hardware, or surfaces that retain heat beyond body temperature.

  • Fill materials in beds and cushions must maintain loft after 12 months of daily compression.

  • Comfort is validated by an animal, not an engineer. Products enter testing with live animals before approval.

05Form
  • Every dimension must be correct. Not approximate. Not close. Correct.

  • No decorative elements that serve no structural or functional role.

  • Proportions are drawn from natural ratios, not industry templates.

  • A product may be rejected for being too large. Scale matters as much as material.

06Simplicity
  • Before production, one element is removed. If the product is still correct, it stays removed.

  • If a product requires instructions to assemble or clean, it is too complex.

  • We do not add variations — colors, sizes, patterns — beyond what is functionally necessary.

07Beauty
  • A product is beautiful when nothing about it is wrong. Not when something about it is impressive.

  • Beauty is evaluated at distance and at close range. A product must be correct from both.

  • Patina is considered at design stage. How will this look in two years? Five? That answer must be good.

08Packaging
  • The box is part of the product. It arrives first. It sets the expectation.

  • No plastic fill, no foam peanuts, no synthetic tissue. Linen, cotton, or FSC-certified paper only.

  • The wordmark appears once, small, debossed or printed in a single color at most.

  • Packaging is reusable wherever possible. The box should be worth keeping.

09Long-Term Ownership
  • Replacement parts are available for a minimum of seven years after a product is discontinued.

  • If a product wears in a way that affects function, we offer a repair program before a replacement.

  • We do not deprecate colorways or materials without a minimum 6-month advance notice to existing owners.

05Curation

Saying no to the wrong product
is the most important decision we make.

What earns its place

  • +

A product that solves one thing with total conviction.

  • +

A material that improves with age.

  • +

A form that would have been correct ten years ago and will be correct ten years from now.

  • +

A product that a designer or architect would choose for their own home.

  • +

A product that the animal clearly prefers.

  • +

Something we cannot find a reason to change.

What never enters the catalog

  • ×

Any product whose primary selling argument is its price.

  • ×

Any product that requires a trend to be desirable.

  • ×

Any product that is difficult to clean.

  • ×

Any product made primarily of synthetic materials without compelling functional justification.

  • ×

Any product that carries a logo larger than necessary for identification.

  • ×

Any product that arrives in packaging we would be embarrassed to receive.

  • ×

Any product that degrades visibly within two years of normal use.

  • ×

Any product we would not own ourselves.

"When a buyer is uncertain, the answer is no. A product added to the catalog with uncertainty is a product we cannot fully stand behind. We would rather have a smaller catalog of things we believe in completely than a larger one we can only partly defend."

06Photography

Every photograph is a claim
about how life can feel.

Light

Natural only. Never flash, never ring light, never artificial fill. Morning or late afternoon. Diffused through glass. The light should feel like something you could walk into.

Architecture

Real spaces. Real homes. Concrete, plaster, oak, stone, linen. Nothing decorated for the shoot. If a prop was brought to set, it should not be visible as a prop.

Animals

Never posed. Never in costume. Never performing. Animals are photographed at rest, in motion, or in their natural relationship with the space. They are never props.

People

Rarely present. When present, identifiable only by a hand, a shoulder, a foot. We are not lifestyle marketing. We are documenting a way of living, not selling it.

Composition

Generous negative space. The subject occupies less of the frame than feels comfortable. Horizon lines that are not centered. Empty rooms with one right thing in them.

Color

Warm ivory, stone, pale oak, cool shadow. These are not filters. They are the palette of the homes we shoot in. We do not grade toward a look. We shoot toward a reality.

Mood

Quiet. Still. The photograph should feel like the moment before something happens, or just after. Never the moment itself. There is no energy, no action, no drama. Just presence.

Format

Medium format preferred. 35mm acceptable. Digital only when medium format is genuinely impractical. The grain, the latitude, the rendering of skin and fur and fabric on film is irreplaceable.

Never

White seamless backdropsProduct against pure whiteProps that arrive in a vanStyled food or drink in frameEye contact between animal and cameraLogos or brand names visible in the environmentSaturated or high-contrast color gradingWatermarks, credits, or graphics overlaid on imageAny image that could have been made by anyone else
07Design Philosophy

Design is not how something looks.
It is how correct something is.

Rounded or sharp?

Sharp.

Zero border radius as default. Corners are softened only when dictated by safety or function. We do not round edges to appear friendly.

Organic or geometric?

Both, in tension.

Natural materials with precise forms. The warmth of linen cut to exact dimensions. The grain of oak shaped to a true edge. We do not choose between them. We hold them together.

Minimal or expressive?

Minimal as a starting condition.

We do not reach for expression. We reach for correctness. If expression emerges from correctness, it is welcome. If expression is pursued for its own sake, it does not belong here.

Warm or cold?

Warm.

Not in palette, necessarily — in feeling. A product should feel chosen, cared for, made by someone. Cold precision without warmth is engineering, not design.

Luxury or restraint?

Restraint as a form of luxury.

We do not add to signal quality. We demonstrate quality by what we remove. The most luxurious object is the one that needed nothing added.

Timeless or seasonal?

Timeless without exception.

If we are asking whether a product is still relevant in three years, it was never the right product. UrbanLoved design does not age because it was never fashionable to begin with.

09Customer Experience

Every interaction is the brand.
Not just the product.

01The website

Calm. Unhurried. No popups, no countdowns, no chat bubbles. The customer should feel they have arrived somewhere considered. The product should be visible. The decision should be easy.

02The order confirmation

Two sentences. What was ordered. When it will arrive. Nothing else. No upsell. No survey request. No social follow prompt. The transaction is complete. We honor that.

03The box

Arrives looking like it was packed by someone who cared. No tape across the wordmark. No excess material inside. The product is accessible without tools, struggle, or confusion.

04The unboxing

Tissue paper first. Then the product. A single card, uncoated, with one sentence on it. No catalogue insert. No coupon. No survey. The card says one thing worth saying.

05The first use

The product requires no instruction. The animal interacts with it immediately or it does not. If the animal ignores it, we want to know. We consider that data.

06A problem

One email to one person. The response is a solution, not a policy. 'What would make this right for you?' is the only question that matters. We do not defend the product at the expense of the customer.

07A return

We ask one question: was the product defective, or did it not meet your expectations? If defective, we replace it. If expectations, we want to understand why. In both cases, the process is immediate and uncomplicated.

08One year later

The product looks like it has been used and cared for. The owner has never thought about us in a negative context. The animal is still using it. We have not emailed them fourteen times.

10Brand World

Not a demographic.
A way of being in the world.

The UrbanLoved customer is not defined by income, location, or aesthetic preference. They are defined by how deliberately they live. They make decisions slowly and keep things for a long time. They do not own things for appearances, but they care deeply about the quality of what they own. Their pet is not a hobby or an accessory. It is a resident.

Morning

The apartment is quiet. The light comes through a north-facing window and falls across concrete floors in long, pale rectangles. A dog is asleep on a linen bed that has taken on the exact shape of the animal. Someone is making coffee in a kitchen where everything is in the right place. There is no television on. There are no notifications. This is not a performance of a life. It is just a life.

Afternoon

A cat is in a window. The room is otherwise empty. There is a bowl on the floor — ceramic, low, exactly the right size — and a toy that has been used enough to show it. The apartment is not staged. The plant in the corner is real. The books on the shelf were read. The person who lives here is not home right now, and the space does not need them to feel whole.

Evening

Two people are on a sofa that is too small for them and a dog who does not understand that it is too small. There is no performance happening. Nothing is being photographed. The dog is between them, and it is not a choice anyone made consciously — it is just where the dog went, and where it belongs.

Weekend

Someone is at a market, choosing vegetables with the same seriousness they bring to everything. They have a tote bag that is the right size. Their dog is on a lead made of leather that will last longer than either of them. They are not trying to be seen. They are simply themselves in a city that they have made peace with.

Travel

One bag. One pet carrier that does not look like a pet carrier. A hotel room in a city they have not been to before, where the animal walks to the window and looks out at a street that is unknown and, therefore, interesting. Travel with an animal is not complicated when you have the right things.

11 — The Final Page

The UrbanLoved
Standard

01

We make fewer things. We make them better.

02

We design for the animal first, the home second, and the photograph never.

03

We do not release anything we are not certain about.

04

We write less than we think we need to.

05

Every material we use was chosen, not defaulted to.

06

The product carries the name. The name carries the promise.

07

We do not compete. We build what we believe in.

08

Quality does not scale down.

09

The packaging is part of the product.

10

We do not manufacture urgency.

11

We replace doubt with time. We take the time to be certain.

12

We treat the customer as someone with more taste than us, not less.

13

We are not here to win a category. We are here to make something lasting.

“We are not building a pet company. We are building the company that should have existed before — the one that takes seriously the fact that an animal lives in your home, matters to you completely, and deserves better than what the market has always assumed was good enough.”
